Clubs in Berlin 18+: what applies at 16, 17 and 18?

Short answer: almost every club and party in Berlin is 18+. The long answer has two parts – what the law allows and what the clubs decide for themselves. Both are here, plus what you need to bring so the door lets you in at all.

What the law says

Germany's youth protection act (Jugendschutzgesetz) regulates in section 5 who may attend public dance events – and a club is exactly that. Under 16 you are not allowed in at all without a parent or an adult with written parental authority. At 16 and 17 you may enter, but only until midnight. From 18 there is no legal limit.

For alcohol, section 9 applies: beer, wine and sparkling wine from 16; spirits and anything containing spirits – long drinks and most cocktails included – only from 18.

These are the upper limits of what a club may allow. It can be stricter, and in Berlin it almost always is.

Why Berlin clubs are 18+ anyway

Berlin club nights start late. At midnight, when 16- and 17-year-olds would have to leave, most places are only just getting going. A door that would have to clear out every minor at midnight is not workable for a club – so almost every promoter sets a minimum age of 18 from the start. Some parties are even 21+.

On friendslist.de the minimum age is shown on every party right under the title (“18+”). That is the promoter's rule – and it is what counts at the door, not the law.

The parental consent form – and why it rarely helps

A “Muttizettel” is a written delegation of parental authority: your parents hand supervision for the night to an adult who goes in with you. Legally this exists. In practice hardly any Berlin club accepts one, because the door cannot verify the signature or check that the adult is actually looking after you.

If you want to try, ask the club beforehand – every club page here lists the club's website and Instagram. Do not count on it working at the door.

Which ID you need

A national ID card or passport. A driving licence is fine at many doors but not all – and a photo of your ID on your phone is almost never accepted. Bring the original even if you clearly look older: the door checks the document, not your face.

No ID, no entry. That also applies with a guest-list spot and with a purchased ticket.

Going out under 18 in Berlin

It exists, but not in the well-known clubs: parties for 16+ usually run as separate events that start earlier and end at midnight. Promoters can set a lower minimum age on friendslist.de – it is then shown on the party. The listings below show what is on right now.
