Partying at 16 in Berlin: where you can go out at 16 and 17
Updated 5 October 2026·4 min read
You can go out at 16 in Berlin – just not everywhere and not all night. Youth protection law sets the frame, the promoter decides the rest. Here is what generally applies, where parties for 16+ happen and what you need at the door.
What applies at 16 and 17 – the rule of thumb
Germany's youth protection act (Jugendschutzgesetz) regulates who may attend public dance events – a party is exactly that. The general rule: at 16 and 17 you may stay until midnight without an adult holding parental authority; under 16 not at all without one; from 18 there is no legal limit. Not legal advice – just the rule of thumb doors work with.
The law is an upper limit: a promoter can be stricter, and in Berlin they usually are. The well-known clubs only fill up after midnight – clearing every minor out at midnight is not workable for them. That is why most listings say ‘18+’; parties for 16+ are separate events that start earlier and end on time.
Muttizettel: the parental consent form
A ‘Muttizettel’ is a written delegation of parental authority: your parents hand supervision for the night to an adult, who goes in and stays with you. The idea is widely used. Whether a promoter accepts the form is their own decision – many Berlin clubs do not, because the door can check neither the signature nor the companion.
If you want to try: ask the promoter beforehand, bring the original plus your companion's ID and a copy of the ID of the parent who signed. And be prepared for the door to say no anyway. Why almost every club is that strict is under clubs in Berlin 18+.
Where parties for 16+ happen
Three formats are typical. First, dedicated 16+ series, usually on Fridays or Saturdays, doors in the early evening, end at midnight. Second, mainstream clubs that occasionally run an under-18 night – charts, hip-hop, 2000s, whatever fills the floor. Third, school and youth parties in rented venues that spread via Instagram and appear in no calendar.
Because everything ends at midnight, these parties often start between 6 and 8 pm. Come early – at 10 pm you get two hours for the full price. In the calendar they are under parties from 16, each with club, time, entry and minimum age. If it says ‘18+’, do not bother going.
Guest list and ID
Parties for 16+ often have a guest list. On friendslist.de it is called Friendslist: free, no account, name and e-mail suffice, plus up to three friends. The QR code arrives by e-mail. Every list has a sign-up deadline and a waiting list when full; what it gets you – often only until a certain time – is on the event. Details: guest list guide.
At the door you show the QR code or give your name, plus ID: national ID card or passport, the original. Parties for 16+ check carefully because the promoter is liable for the age limit – a photo of it is not enough. Even with a list spot the door has the last word: the list is a perk, not a right.
Alcohol: what goes at 16 and what does not
Here the law is clear: beer, wine and sparkling wine from 16; spirits and anything containing spirits – shots, long drinks, most cocktails – only from 18. Many under-18 parties go further and serve no alcohol, or mark guests by age with wristbands. That is not harassment, it is liability.
For you this mainly means: arrive sober. Doors send away tipsy guests, at youth parties all the more, often the whole group with them. Pre-drinking in the park risks the night for everyone. Drink water in between and do not leave your glass unattended – at 16 just as at 30.
Staying safe and getting home
Tell someone where you are and when you plan to be back. Stay with your people all night, agree on a meeting point in case phones die, and talk to the staff if something feels off – many events have awareness teams or at least supervisors who are there for exactly that.
Getting home: at midnight the U-Bahn and S-Bahn are still running, on Friday and Saturday nights even all night, on weekdays night buses take over afterwards. Plan the route before you leave and keep your phone charged. If someone picks you up, agree on a fixed meeting point within sight of the entrance.
- Original ID – national ID card or passport.
- QR code or ticket on a charged phone.
- Muttizettel only if the promoter confirmed it beforehand.

Common questions about this
Can I go to a club in Berlin at 16?
As a general rule until midnight, even without a companion. Most clubs set 18 as minimum age, though – check the age shown on the party.
Does a Muttizettel work at Berlin clubs?
Rarely. It exists legally, but many promoters do not accept it. Ask beforehand and do not count on the door.
What can I drink at 16?
By law beer, wine and sparkling wine – no spirits and nothing containing spirits. Many under-18 parties serve no alcohol at all.
Can I sign up for a guest list at 16?
Yes, if the party's minimum age is 16. Signing up is free with name and e-mail. Bring ID – entry remains the door's decision.
